THE IMPORTANCE OF POSTURE
Few books ever mention the importance of correct posture and it is generally taken for granted. Since I am vitally interested in body-mind language the energy flows, I would like to say a few words about the way we romiromi.
THERAPY ROOM
It is preferable to set aside one room especially for the younger turoro therapy. The advantages are several; it is available at all times ready to be used for healing and karakia if you want to progress in romiromi.
LEARNING
Healing does not have to be confined to the indoors.
ROMIROMI TABLES
If the table is too low, you are likely to finish up with a sore back; if it is too high, you cannot give an effective romiromi.
PREPARATION
The following strokes are some of the basic movements in romiromi.
EFFLEURAGE Light stroking -
Deep stroking -
PERTISSAGE Kneading -
Picking up -
Rolling -
Pinching -
Plucking -
TAPOTEMENT Clapping -
Beating -
Tapping -
Hacking -
Pressure points -
Rotation -
MASSAGE ROUTINES
Where to start with romiromi - that is the question.
Order number One: Order number Two:
Waewae (Legs) Face
Other combinations are also possible but they do not necessarily provide better romiromi.
OILS
In this chapter we will discuss the use of oils. Although creams and powders are used as well at times by some Takawaenga, we will leave them aside.
Here is a short list of the effects some oils have on us:
Manuka - muscular relief
This list is by no means complete.
DURATION OF ROMIROMI
The time available will most likely determine how long a romiromi is going to last rather than how long it will take in most cases. A total romiromi takes one hour. It could be divided as follows:
Back 20 mins. Neck 5 mins.
FREQUENCY OF HEALING
Full body romiromi given once or twice a week for relaxation purposes seems enough. It can be done more often if so desired because the results will be good. The other types of therapy may be practiced more often according to the needs of the turoro at the time.
PRESSURE IN MASSAGE
Pressure could be summed up as follows:
FULL BODY ROMIROMI
TIKANGA/KAWA
Always karakia for yourself and turoro before commencement.
TOWEL TECHNIQUE (Front)
Apply towel technique at all times.
1. Females - two towels. One across the breast, the other across the stomach towards the mid front legs.
2. Males - one towel. Place across the stomach towards the mid front legs.
TOWEL TECHNIQUE (Back)
1. Females - one towel across the buttocks down towards the back of knees.
APPLYING OIL
Apply oil into cupped hands, rub vigorously together, this will warm your hands and the oil.
ROMIROMI TECHNIQUE
All stroke techniques are applied 8-10 times.
KUHA (UPPER LEGS)
Apply towel technique.
PONA (KNEE)
Romiromi thumbs either side of knee cap, move patella (should move approx 1" either side). This indicates turoro is relaxed.
WAEWAE (LOWER LEGS)
One hand cup outside of the leg with a long soothing stroke from below knee to ankle.
PUKU (ABDOMEN)
Apply oil.
a. Two hands circulating the outer intestines, following with one hand or knuckles kneading technique.
TECHNIQUE FOR THE PUKU (ABDOMEN)
Romiromi of the abdomen is a real test of one's skills. All strokes are always clockwise, ie. follow the ascending transverse - descending colon.
REMARKS
Advise your turoro not to eat a large meal before romiromi. An empty bladder is to be preferred for obvious reasons. If the abdominal muscles are tense, lift the legs slightly by placing a pillow under the knees.
NOTES
Laughing provides a splendid internal romiromi. All the internal organs benefit by it and so do the flabby muscles of the abdomen. Tension leaves the body as if by magic. There is no doubt about it: Having a good laugh is a splendid medicine for everyone.
TE UMA (CHEST/BREAST)
Females - Do not romiromi. Explanation may be required.
Males - Two hands to do criss cross motions. Do not touch nipples.
RINGARINGA (ARMS)
Divide into two areas.
STROKES
- Flat edge of hand into biceps, whole hand long soothing stroke.
KAKI (NECK)
TECHNIQUES FOR TUARA (BACK)
BACK/BUTTOCK
BACK
TOU (BUTTOCK)
WAEWAE (LEGS)
KUHA (UPPER LEGS)
WAEWAE (LOWER LEG)
NOTES
Takawaenga: When romiromi is applied from in front of turoro, move your body to the side of turoro head, it is not customary for Maori to place erogenous zone direct into turoro head.
PAKIHIWI (SHOULDERS)
NOTES
Whenever I think of some part of my tinana being healed I ask myself, "What do I like best?" Well, a shoulder massage features prominently.
TECHNIQUE
NOTES
Right shoulder up - Masculine aspect emphasised
FOOT ROMIROMI
REMARKS
TECHNIQUE
NOTES
Bad feet and weak ankles create all sorts of problems. Curled toes can be painful and throw us off balance. To hold ourselves upright becomes a tiresome effort. We have flat feet (unstable), clutching feet (uncertainty), lead feet (heavy going), tiptoer feet (not in touch with reality), heavy heeled (uncompromising), sure-footed (knowing), etc.
The question may be asked: Are we standing on our own feet? Do we "drag our feet?" "Dig our heels?" "Put our foot into it?" Are we "grounded?" Hence our feet tell a true story.
